Boy does it feel good to finally find a good movie amongst the present day piles of filth. And a good horror movie at that?! Unbelievable! A haunting, highly original, & intriguing movie from the strange folks of Sweden.. relating to vampires. Notice how I didn’t call it a vampire movie? That was purposeful; to label it a “vampire movie” is to do the film a large injustice. Much more character driven than any other such film I’ve seen.. Highlights include the incredible atmosphere of Sweden; beautiful, wintery, and dark landscapes which frame the action perfectly yet subtlety. Outstanding dialogue and acting by the young stars.. Who said kids can’t act? This movie should be a lesson to all horror directors.. Focus on the feeling, the meaning, the characters. Once you make it realistic and believable, the horror can emerge naturally. Truly a wonderful movie that I couldn’t possibly recommend more. For those of you with Netflix like me, go add & stream it right away.. I might go as far to call it a modern classic.

The Wind that Shakes the Barley – 2006

I had never heard of this movie, but I decided to pick it up because it had Cillian Murphy in it; you know the Scarecrow from the new Batman. It’s quite good, and although a little over two hours long it never seems to drag.. It’s got some truly great acting by everyone and the music is perfect. Basically, it’s about the Irish fighting to free themselves from the British in the 1920’s and the infighting that ensues among the factions that arise. I don’t know how this movie did it but it made me hate the British even more than I did before: they’re so pompous with all their East India Trading Companies and huge navies. In fact ,I rank this movie right up there with Braveheart in its ability to make you despise ol’ “Great” Britain and all it’s about. The only things this movie is lacking are some good old fashioned action scenes.. There were two major ones and they were lackluster indeed. They also didn’t build up Damien (Cillian Murphy) and Sineads’ relationship enough to make you feel for her. Anyways, watch it if you are into good movies and hating Australians (it throws a little of that in as well.)

A mildly amusing movie that somehow failed to hold my attention for more than 10 minutes at a time, despite all the action. Fighting, running around, angry people, revenge, blah blah. Hugh Jackman makes a pretty darn good Wolverine, as usual.. Can’t complain there.. I’m just not amused seeing my X-men in a movie theater like this. They try to make it too “cool & edgy & fresh”.. Bah. Probably most 12 year old’s favorite movie ever.. And surely a lot of 35 year old fan-boys’ too. As it is, it’s the best of the X-men movies so far and clearly worth watching if you’re into the direction they’re going.. I expect more from movies than one-liners, screams, and backflips though.. I’m sure a lot of fans were pleased, but as a movie held on its own merit (and away from the universe of fan boy excitement) it’s barely worth more than a power rangers film.

This movie STINKS.
Just kidding. It’s fantastic!
Just kidding. This movie seriously stinks.
Nicolas “the Cage” Cage hams up another completely unbelievable story that somehow got made. . His hair is super annoying. Plot tries to twist every couple minutes and ends up in a big nasty pretzel. In one of my favorite scenes, ol’ Nicolas believes a bunch of silent men in the woods are aliens.. and gives his only child over to them.

Nicolas Cage is knowing that this movie sucks.
Wonder if he’ll get tired of being able to predict the future… It’s really just a lot of “running out of time.” It calms down from plot flipping for truly only one really weird scene; that of Nick slowly walking through the debris of an airplane crash with burning people screaming at him. It seriously went on for at least 5 minutes.
